Is there really such a thing as zero-impact electricity?

Dr Daniel Collado-Ruiz
In LCA, we don't use "zero" because every unit of energy has a physical footprint. To capture wind or solar power, we still have to mine raw materials and manufacture infrastructure, meaning the electricity carries a "debt" from the production of the turbines or panels themselves. You are likely familiar with the carbon accounting convention of assigning a zero impact to renewable electricity; while this is a useful simplification to encourage the switch to green energy, it doesn't reflect the full physical reality. By digging deeper into the energy provider’s own supply chain (their Scope 3), LCA replaces that accounting convention with a more representative model of the resources actually consumed to power your operations.
